SEB AT A GLANCE

The Education Department as it was then called was established in July 1979. It was administered  between 1979 and 2004 as a department, at one time under the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and later Ministry of Federal Capital  Territory (MFCT), now defunct.

The fundamental objective of establishing the department was to provide educational services to the teaming population of the territory. What we have today as FCT Secondary Education Board is an off-department which, later transformed into what is today the Education Secretariat.

The establishment of the FCT Secondary Education Board was borne out of the yearnings and aspirations of concerned stakeholders in FCT in the development of education in the territory.

The Board was established in line with the National Secondary Education Commission Decree No. 47 0f 26th May 1999. The Board could not take off along with others in the States, due to some administrative bottlenecks under the erstwhile Education Department. The restructuring of the department into Education Secretariat under the leadership of the present FCT administration saw the need for the establishment of the Board and did not hesitate in tackling the bottlenecks to ensure that the Board sees the light of day.

The establishment of FCT-Secondary Education Board was like a dream come true. Though it was created based on the said Decree, it was facilitated mainly by the reform agenda of Mr. Minister,
Mallam Nasir el Rufai this reform created about four secretaries among which Education Secretariat is prominent.

The Education Secretariat pursued vigorously the creation of some agencies for administrative convenience and quick service delivery, among which is the Board. The Board since its inception barely nine months ago has tried within its limited resources to live up to expectations as it relates to its mandate.
